SSC CGL Salary

SSC CGL posts are placed on the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. Your salary depends on two things — the pay level of the post, and the city of posting, since HRA is determined by city class.

Pay level by post

Pay Level Basic Pay (₹) Posts
Level 8 47,600 – 1,51,100 Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer
Level 7 44,900 – 1,42,400 Assistant Section Officer, Inspector (Income Tax / Central Excise / Preventive Officer / Examiner), Sub-Inspector (CBI), Assistant Enforcement Officer, Junior Statistical Officer
Level 6 35,400 – 1,12,400 Sub-Inspector (NIA), Inspector (Posts), Divisional Accountant
Level 5 29,200 – 92,300 Auditor, Accountant, Junior Accountant
Level 4 25,500 – 81,100 Senior Secretariat Assistant / UDC, Tax Assistant, Sub-Inspector (NCB)

Allowances on top of basic pay

  • Dearness Allowance (DA) — a fixed percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) — depends on city class: highest in X (metro) cities, then Y, then Z
  • Transport Allowance (TA) — varies by city and pay level
  • Certain posts carry special allowances, for example field postings or hazardous duty

In-hand salary

The amount you actually receive is basic + DA + HRA + TA, less the NPS contribution, CGHS and income tax. This is why the same post pays differently in a metro and in a smaller city — the difference is mostly HRA.

[[VERIFY]] — DA is revised every six months, so an exact in-hand figure has deliberately been left out here. If you add a worked example, state the DA rate and the date it applies to, so readers know how current it is.

Career growth

SSC CGL posts carry regular promotion, through departmental examinations as well as seniority. An Assistant Section Officer can rise to Section Officer and Under Secretary; an Inspector to Superintendent and beyond.
